Advanced Tablet/Card Weaving - 3/1 Twill Hallstatt pattern
This is an advanced card/tablet weaving class to learn the 3/1 Broken Twill technique. Students will learn the ancient "Hallstatt" pattern, recreated from textiles recovered from a 2000 year old salt mine in Austria. Students should know basic Card Weaving.

Students will learn to “speed warp” their looms, and how to turn, rotate and flip the cards to get hundreds of different designs. Advanced students can use this same warping to learn how to create patterns and write words with string. Basic Inkle weaving recommended but not required.

Beginning Drop Spindle -- Make Your Own Yarn!
Ever wanted to make your own yarn? Learn how to spin yarn from wool roving with a drop spindle. No experience with anything is required. We’ll go over all you need to know and give you time lots of time to practice. You’ll take home a drop spindle and some wool to work with. Spinning is a very satisfying way to get in touch with our crafting past and is a great Yin to the Yang of our life full of technology. Warning: it takes practice, you won’t leave the class spinning perfect yarn, but you will know what you need to go home and work on perfecting your new skill.

Beginning Lucet with 2 cords
Lucets are totally portable and fun to use! Lucet made cord is an alternative to kumihimo, icord and crochet chains. The cord can be make from any yarn and can be used for drawstrings, trim, frogs, shoelaces, and any other cord uses. Class will cover a method of lucet cord making that uses 2 threads, allowing for two color cords, button holes, and other fun stuff. No experience at anything is required. I will provide, and students will keep, everything needed for the class project: Dinner fork lucets, yarn, bobbins, and written instructions

Carding fiber can be used both to process fleece and to blend color. Learn how to use this period fiber tool to your advantage. Students should bring note taking materials and carders to class. A very very few carders will be available to loan.

Combs were extensively used in our period of study. Combs were used to process fleece, but can also be used to blend color. Learn a little of their history, types, and how to use them to create incredible top to be spun into beautiful yarn.

Dye Prep: Prepare your fiber, yarn, fabric for the Dyepot
Learn how and Prepare your fiber, yarn, or cloth for dyeing. Highly recommended if you are going to dye in any of the later classes. Class will label, scour, and mordant dye materials. Dyepots are shared so please no yardage, no blue jeans. Students should bring plastic bags for wet items, note taking materials.

Viking Whipcord Braid
Braiding is a fun, period method of cord-making! Every ancient culture used twisting, braiding and knotting of fiber to make yarn, cording, rope and to trim fabric. The Vikings used a braid as straps for their embroidered aprons as well as other purposes. The Vikings could have used the overhead beams in their longhouses to hang the weights, making cords to pass the time during the long Norse winters.
